Basic Machinima Tutorial

You can use this link to play the movie in SL.

While seeking submissions for The Grid Review, one of the things that I hear most often is that residents don't know HOW to make machinima. My time these days is limited and classes don't happen as often as they used to, so I summed up a lot of things covered in the class in this machinima. You can also find a written tutorial on Alt-Zoom's website. Lastly, Thinkerer Melville posted a 6-Step Workshop on machinima.

In this machinima, you will find tips on:

  • What your preferences should be
  • What resolution you should film in
  • How to record your movie using the built-in recording system
  • How to activate the Debug menu
  • How to turn off the User Interface (UI)

As for editing, for Windows users, they can use Windows Movie Maker for free. There is a WMM Community on Microsoft's site and Atomic Learning has some great tutorials. Another decent site is WindowsMovieMaker.NET.

For Mac users, most newer Macs come with iMovie. Apple has you covered with their tutorial section. Also, for those who use Boot Camp on the Mac, Aenea Nori wrote a great tutorial on conversion.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact me! I look forward to seeing your guest submissions now that you can't plead the 5th! :D
